Internal Structure

The Guild is organised along two main lines: rank and division. Guild ranks are analogous to ranks in any traditional crafts guild. Guild divisions are organised along the services the Guild provides to the current fair.

Guild Ranks

Except for the Guildmistress and her Stableboy, all ranks beyond Candidate are granted near the end of each fair, and advancement to the next rank is determined during a meeting of those members in each rank and above. For example, the Masters and Foremen meet to determine who will advance to Foreman, then the Masters meet to determine who will hold Master rank.

We have found it amusing to compare the resulting politics to those in the Elizabethan court; parentheticals below refer to the analagous Elizabethan royal ranks.

Guildmaster - The Boss; known by her Blue & Green Knot. (The Queen)
Personal Assistant - Lackey to the Boss (The Queen's Head Lady-in-Waiting)
Stableboy - Keeps Boss Stable (The Court Jester and so much more)
Group Leaders - Heads of the sub-divisions [not really a rank but more an assignment of responsibility]; known by their Blue Knot. (The Privy Council)
Master - Have demonstrated superior level of work, been with the group for a long time; known by their Green Knot. (Dukes, Duchesses)
Foreman - Have demonstrated excellent level of work, not as much as Masters (Earls, Countesses)
Journeyman - Have demonstrated above average level of work (Knights, Ladies)
Apprentice - Have done the basic level of work, usually a first year member (Squires, Maids)
Candidate - Just joined the group, we don't know level of work yet. (Pages)

Division of Labour

Setup and execution of a convincing potrayal of a period parade, progress, or more-than-3-person pageant requires a tremendous amount of work and draws on the expertise and willing co-operation of many Guild members.
